Description

The Chudleigh War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was erected in 1926, with a dedication for the Second World War added in 1948. It is made of granite, featuring bronze plaques and a concrete base.

The memorial consists of a single step base supporting a tall pedestal with a chamfered plinth. Atop the pedestal is a small Latin cross mounted on a two-stepped base of rock-faced granite. A plaque on the south-west face of the pedestal honors the men from Chudleigh who sacrificed their lives in the First World War, reading: ‘IN PROUD AND GRATEFUL / REMEMBRANCE OF / THE MEN / FROM CHUDLEIGH / WHO GALLANTLY / SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES / IN THE CAUSE OF / LIBERTY AND HONOUR / IN THE GREAT WAR / R.I.P’. Above this plaque, fixed to the base of the cross, is another plaque inscribed with the dates ‘1914-1918’. The south-east and north-west sides of the pedestal display plaques recording the names of 60 men who died in the First World War, while the north-east side lists the names of 22 men who died in the Second World War. Additionally, there is a plaque fixed to the base of the cross that reads: ‘THE SEATS PLACED AROUND THE PARISH / ARE TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF / CHUDLEIGH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN / THE 1939 - 1945 WAR’.

The memorial is situated within a triangular-shaped enclosure, which is bounded by late 20th-century cast-iron railings set on chamfered stone plinths. The enclosure contains late 20th-century planters, which do not contribute to the special interest of the memorial and are excluded from the listing.

An early 19th-century obelisk located on the north-east side of the enclosure is listed separately at Grade II.
