Description
CHUDLEIGH WOODWAY STREET, Chudleigh SX 8679 6/83 United Reformed church including gate piers and railings

Chapel. 1830 (datestone) with late C19 internal refurbishment. Rendered stone rubble; slate roof, gabled at ends. Rectangular plan, gable end to the street. Symmetrical 3-bay (ritual) west end with 2 tiers of windows and a blind keyed oculus in the gable above a platband. Central panelled door with pedimented doorcase. Italianate windows with moulded round-headed architraves with keystones and pilasters; brackets below the sills. Upper tier windows left and right are taller than their lower tier counterparts. The upper tier has a central blind recess of the same design as the windows. Inscription on platband "Founded 1710, rebuilt 1830". The right return has 1 round-headed window. Grey limestone gate piers with pyramidal caps and a section of iron railings in front of the (ritual) west end are included in the listing. Interior Modest fittings and west end gallery. The building is said to have had a 2 tier west end gallery at one time. "The chapel built in 1830 for a church, formerly Presbyterian, which claims to have originated in 1662, replaced a meeting-house reputedly built in 1710" (Stell).
