Description

The United Reformed Church, built in 1830, features a chapel with a later 19th-century internal refurbishment. It is constructed from rendered stone rubble and has a slate roof that is gabled at both ends. The building has a rectangular plan, with the gable end facing the street. The symmetrical west end has three bays and includes two tiers of windows, along with a blind keyed oculus in the gable above a platband. The central entrance is a panelled door framed by a pedimented doorcase. The windows are designed in an Italianate style, featuring moulded round-headed architraves with keystones and pilasters, and brackets beneath the sills. The upper tier windows on the left and right are taller than those in the lower tier, and there is a central blind recess in the upper tier that matches the window design. An inscription on the platband states "Founded 1710, rebuilt 1830". On the right side of the building, there is one round-headed window. The listing also includes grey limestone gate piers with pyramidal caps and a section of iron railings in front of the west end. The interior has modest fittings and a west end gallery, which is said to have originally been a two-tier structure. This chapel was built for a church that was formerly Presbyterian and claims to have originated in 1662, replacing a meeting-house believed to have been built in 1710.
