Description

Alma House is a house dating from the early 19th century, and possibly a remodelling of an earlier structure, located on Old Exeter Street in Chudleigh. The exterior is cement-rendered, likely over stone, with a cement-washed slate roof concealed behind a parapet. Brick end stacks are present, and one stack projects through the roof. The house has a double-depth plan, comprising two rooms wide with a central passage and service rooms at the rear. The front elevation has three bays, and it’s notable for its lack of perfect symmetry, hinting at possible previous alterations. A central porch is supported by slender Tuscan columns and features a panelled soffit. The front door is six-panelled, with panel detailing to the reveals and reeded pilasters. Ground floor windows are shallow bows with cornices, incorporating 12-pane sashes in the centre and 2-pane sashes on the sides. The first floor has three 12-pane sashes, each with a moulded architrave. Original iron railings are situated in front of the house. The interior was not inspected, but may contain features of interest. The exterior remains largely complete.
