Description
This is a section of wall forming part of the garden of Culver House, dating to the 16th century. It includes gate piers and is situated on New Exeter Street, Chudleigh. Constructed of local grey limestone rubble, the wall is topped with dressed coping stones and features ashlar gate piers. A round-headed niche, previously used as a dipping place for drinking water, is incorporated into the wall. The tall gate piers are square, topped with pyramidal caps. The inner gate piers have deeply chamfered inside corners with stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops and moulded corbels at the top, supporting flat cap stones. A system for providing water to the town of Chudleigh from the lower slopes of Haldon existed from the end of the 16th century, known as 'Pot Water'. In 1867, William Bower Scott improved this system to enhance the water supply for cooking and firefighting. The tall stone wall is a significant feature of the New Exeter Street streetscape.
