Description

This section of wall is located opposite numbers 61 and 61A on New Exeter Street in Chudleigh. It is likely from the late 19th century and is constructed from local grey limestone rubble with dressed coping stones. The wall is tall and features a round-headed niche on the right side. A system for bringing water to Chudleigh from the lower slopes of Haldon has been in place since the end of the 16th century, known as 'Pot Water'. In 1867, William Bower Scott proposed improvements to this system to enhance the water supply for cooking and firefighting.
