Description

The Town Hall in Chudleigh is a town hall built around 1860, with modifications made in the 20th century. It is constructed from local grey limestone rubble, featuring dressed limestone quions and dressings, and has a gabled slate roof. The building has a T-shaped plan with a gabled projection at right angles to the main range in the center, designed in an Italianate style.

It stands two storeys high with a symmetrical three-bay front. The central projection is gabled and includes a keyed oculus in the gable, along with a platband at the first floor level. On the ground floor, the central projection has two round-headed openings with keystones, with the arches supported by a moulded stringcourse. The left opening has been blocked, while the right features paired doors beneath a fanlight with spoke glazing. The outer bays have segmental-headed tripartite sashes with moulded stone architraves.

On the first floor, there are three round-headed sash windows in the center, complete with moulded architraves, keystones, and brackets below the sills. The outer bays contain segmental-headed 12-pane sashes with moulded architraves and brackets below the sills; the right-hand window has been converted into a fire escape door with external iron steps. Although the interior was not inspected, it may hold interest. Despite the 20th-century modifications, the Town Hall remains an attractive building that enhances the town's appearance.
