Description
This blacksmith's shop, dating from the early to mid-19th century, is located immediately west-southwest of Number 27 on Knighton Road in Wembury. The building is constructed from stone rubble and features a corrugated-iron roof with gabled ends. It has a single-cell rectangular plan with an axial stack positioned towards the west end, and there are later outshuts at both the west end and the rear.
The exterior consists of two storeys and presents an asymmetrical three-bay south front. There is a wide doorway to the right of the centre, featuring plank double doors with wrought-iron hinges. To the left of this doorway are two windows, while there is one window to the right, all with shutters and timber lintels. On the rear (north) side, there is a centrally located doorway with a plank door and wrought-iron hinges, a window to the right, and a lean-to outshut clad in corrugated iron on the left. The west end has a weatherboarded outshut with a lean-to roof made of asbestos tiles.
Inside, the forge is located near the west end and includes a stone stack with a slated canopy and bellows situated behind it. The roof features trusses with nailed lapped collars.
