Description

The Langdon Court Hotel is a country house, originally dating back to the medieval period and substantially rebuilt in 1577. It was remodelled in 1707 and altered and extended around 1877. The house is constructed of rough ashlar with a slate roof. Originally with projecting wings on either side, the 1707 remodelling introduced a new front which filled in the space between the wings, resulting in a square plan around a small central courtyard. The building has two storeys, an attic, and a cellar. A granite string course runs at first-floor level.

The west front has a 2:3:2 bay arrangement, with gabled projections at either end, topped with ball finials and sundials. The central three bays feature a heavy modillion cornice. Sash windows with glazing bars are present, some retaining thick glazing bars, and are set within stone arches with keystones. The centre first-floor window is framed by rusticated architraves featuring a grotesque mask keystone. Ground-floor windows are granite mullion/transom windows. A blocked central doorway is flanked by pairs of pilasters, topped with an entablature and a large segmental pediment with pineapple finials. The tympanum displays the quartered arms of the Calmady and Courtney families.

The south elevation has a 2:1:3:1:2 bay arrangement. The third and seventh bays have rusticated window architraves similar to those on the west front, and doorways are situated below, framed by moulded architraves with mask keystones and broken segmental pediments on console brackets. Good, early 18th-century lead rainwater heads and drainpipes are located on the south side. The east front is largely 19th century, with five bays and a two-storied gabled porch at the centre. The asymmetrical north front features a central gabled section with a range of sash and stone mullion windows in segmentally headed openings. A late 19th-century crenellated tower stands on the north-west corner, incorporating an octagonal stair turret. 19th-century brick chimney stacks and 20th-century dormers are also present.

Inside, the building was extensively altered in the 19th century but retains an early 18th-century open well staircase with twisted balusters, a heavy hand rail ramping at the corners, carved scroll brackets, and dado panelling. Two early 18th-century dog-leg secondary staircases remain. There is also some bolection panelling with broken scroll pediments over doors and cornices. Various chimneypieces are present. A brick-vaulted cellar, supported on granite piers and dating from around the early 18th century, is also a feature.

Langdon was the ancestral seat of the Calmadys. Vincent Calmady, a lawyer, purchased the property from the Crown in 1555 and rebuilt the medieval house in 1577. Josias Calmady remodelled it in 1707. The Calmadys sold Langdon in 1875.
