Description
White Dove Cottage is a holiday cottage that was originally built as a shippen, or cow house, with a hay loft above. It dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century and features rubble slate walling topped with a 21st-century slate roof. The building is L-shaped, consisting of a long range running north-south and a shorter range running east-west, and has two storeys.
On the exterior, the southern gable end includes a door on the left and a window in the gable. The east side of the long range has a doorway to the right of center, flanked by casement windows, all in their original openings. At both ends of this range, there are glazed doors set in adapted window openings. The eastern wing has two glazed doors at ground floor level. The renewed slate roof features 21st-century roof lights on both ranges.
Originally built as a shippen associated with Langdon Barton Farmhouse, White Dove Cottage was converted into a holiday cottage around 2003. It is designated at Grade II for its architectural significance as a good example of a vernacular farm building that reflects agricultural practices from the late 18th century and early 19th century.
