Description

Hele Almshouses, built in 1682, consist of six almshouses and a chapel located at the center. The structure is made of slate rubble with stone windows and doorways, topped with a slate roof featuring gabled ends. It is one and a half storeys high and has a long seven-bay range. The chapel, positioned centrally, has a gabled roof and a round-headed doorway with imposts, a keyblock, and a hood mould above, which is dated 1881. This doorway is flanked by small single-light stone windows and a three-light window above.

Each of the three almshouses beside the chapel features a small gable with a window that has two four-centred arch lights and a hood mould. The ground floor of these almshouses has single-light four-centred arch windows with hood moulds and chamfered edges, along with Tudor-arched doorways. There is slated weathering over the ground floor of the chapel and the first cottage on either side, while the other cottages have slate drips over their ground floor windows and doors. The building includes large stone rubble chimney stacks at the gable ends and along the ridge, with casement windows that have leaded panels and glazed doors. The chapel has a plank door.

Inside, the cottages are said to have exposed ceiling beams, while the chapel features an unceiled wagon roof. Above the window on the east wall, there is some contemporary moulded plasterwork. The Almshouses and chapel were a gift from Sir Warwick Hele of Wembury House, who served as High Sheriff of Devon.
