Description
The Old Smithy is a blacksmith's shop, originally built in the 18th century and remodeled around the mid-19th century. It features stone rubble construction with dressed stone quoins and a combination of plain tile, pantile, and fishscale slate roofs with gabled ends. There are brick axial stacks and a ridge ventilator.
The plan is rectangular, with an open central area that extends to the roof. It has gable-end stacks with hearths at both ends and a front wall that includes a large 5-light window range. On either side, there are 1-bay, 2-storey ranges.
The exterior shows a single-storey central section that projects forward under a lean-to roof covered in fishscale slates, featuring a 5-light window with overlapping panes. The flanking 2-storey ranges have 2-light casements on the first floor, a 3-light window on the ground floor to the left, and a doorway to the right.
Inside, there are hearths at both ends and a heavily smoke-blackened 3-bay queen-strut roof. The smithy is fully equipped with blacksmith's tools. This smithy has been associated with the King family, who are said to have worked here for 400 years.
