34 And 36, High Street

Nos. 34 and 36 High Street are a pair of shops with accommodation above, built in the late 19th century. The buildings are constructed of rendered brick with granite detailing and feature slate hanging on the front. They have a gabled slate roof with brick stacks and rise to three storeys. The double-gabled front has two windows and original shop fronts with glazed doors set in a bracketed architrave topped with a dentilled cornice. The first floor features tripartite windows with central oriels and top-hung four-pane casements above a transom, framed by rusticated granite pilasters. The top floor, which is slate-hung, has Ipswich windows located beneath broad bracketed eaves and dentilled cornices at the gables. Although the interior was not inspected, it is noted to have original features such as plaster cornices and joinery. This building is a good example of late 19th-century Domestic Revival architecture, designed to complement the fine architecture of the surrounding street.
