Description
Nos. 2 and 3 Market Street are two houses that have been converted into a shop. They date from the early to mid 18th century and have undergone alterations in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings are constructed of brick and feature a tile roof with brick stacks, showcasing a Georgian style.
The structure has two storeys with an attic and a five-window range. A prominent deep brick cornice runs along the top. The ground floor features a 20th-century shop front, which returns to the entrance on King Street to the right. This entrance is marked by a timber lintel with a segmental relieving arch above it. On the first floor, the windows are topped with rubbed brick flat arches and contain four-pane horned sashes. The attic features two gabled dormers.
There are two cross-axial stacks, and the rear of the building has two gabled wings with varied fenestration, mostly consisting of segmental-headed windows with pegged frames. One wing to the left includes a two-light stair window with two transoms and leaded glazing, along with an axial stack. Inside, the property boasts chamfered spine beams and a well-crafted open-well stair with turned balusters.
