Description

No. 1 King Street is a house that has been converted into a shop and office. It dates from the early to mid-18th century and has undergone early 20th-century and later alterations. The building is constructed of brick and features a tiled roof with a brick cross-axial stack. It has an L-shaped plan and faces Church Street, showcasing a Georgian style.

The structure is two storeys high with an attic and has a three-window range. A wooden cornice runs along the top. The ground floor features an early 20th-century shop front, which is contemporary with the shop front at No. 66 Church Street. This shop front includes a black glass fascia and an entrance at a canted angle, complete with an overlight above a glazed door that has decorative glazing bars arranged in a sunburst pattern. There is an entrance to King Street on the right side.

On the first floor, there are three windows with rubbed brick segmental arches above 8-pane horned sashes, while the attic contains two hipped dormers. The shop front extends along the King Street elevation, and a small gabled wing has two rubbed brick segmental-arched window heads above three inserted windows. Inside, some chamfered beams can be found on the ground floor. This building is an important element in the context of Church Street.
