Description

No. 68 Church Street is a house that has been converted into a tea room. It dates from the 17th century, with early to mid-18th century and later alterations. The building features painted brick with some timber framing and has a tiled roof with a large brick stack at one end. It stands two storeys high with an attic and has two single-window ranges, with the right range being lower. The right range includes a brick platt band over the ground floor, a top frieze, and a coved cornice, while the left range has a top brick modillioned cornice. The entrance is located in a late 20th-century shop front at the right end, with a window to the left that may have been a blocked entrance, and a possible blocked entrance at the left end. The ground floor features a segmental-headed window to the left with a 20th-century frame, while the first floor has segmental-headed windows, including one on the left with a three-light transomed pegged frame and another on the right with a 20th-century casement. The attic includes two gabled dormers. At the rear, there is a plastered gabled wing. Inside, the building has stop-chamfered beams, and the rear wing reveals part of the cross frame with wall posts and a cambered tie beam that has been cut through, along with queen struts. There is also a winder stair leading to the attic.
