Description
No. 6 Market Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the early 18th century but has undergone alterations in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The building is made of stuccoed brick and features a tiled roof with an end stack, reflecting Georgian architectural style. It has two storeys and an attic, with a four-window range.
The top of the building is adorned with a wooden cornice that has modillions and a fascia. The ground floor showcases a shop front from the 1870s, which includes panelled and fluted Composite pilasters, a fascia with glass and gilt lettering, and an early 20th-century painted sign that reads "COLEMAN BROTHERS." The shop front also features bracketed end blocks to the canopy and enriched cast iron cresting. The plate-glass windows are flanked by slender colonnetes with enriched brackets, and there is a recessed entrance with an overlight above paired glazed doors, as well as a right-end entrance with an overlight leading to a 20th-century door.
On the first floor, the windows are fitted with 12-pane sashes, while the attic contains two raking dormers with sliding casements. The interior of the ground floor has been significantly altered, but the shop front remains a very fine example from the late 19th century.
