Description

The building at 70 Church Street is a shop dating from the 1820s to 1840s, with a possible earlier rear addition. It is constructed of brick with stucco dressings, featuring a slate roof and brick end stacks. The two-storey building has a two-window frontage. A painted ground floor is complemented by a first-floor sill band. The shop front, dating from the 19th century, includes pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice, with an overlight above a 20th-century door. A carriage entrance on the right has a rusticated elliptical arch and paired plank doors, also with a cornice. Large hooks on the cornice of the shop front and paired doors indicate a former use as a butcher's shop. The first and second-floor windows have rusticated wedge lintels, with 16-pane sashes on the first floor and 8-pane sashes on the second. The interior passage features beams with large hooks. The rear of the building includes a long, gabled wing with a cross-axial stack. The first-floor interior was not inspected.
