Description

The building at 4 and 6 Middlegate is a house, later adapted for use as a shop, dating to the late 18th century. It has undergone alterations in the late 19th century and the mid-20th century. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings and is roofed with pantiles. It features coped gables and a single gable stack. The three-storey structure has a three-window front. The upper windows are single-pane sashes and the windows above are 20th-century tilting casements, all with flat arches. A late-19th-century wooden shopfront is present on the right-hand side, incorporating plain pilasters and domed, curved brackets to the cornice, along with a painted glass sign. A splayed recess to the left provides access with a glazed door, and to the right is a single-pane window. Both the door and window are fitted with leaded glass toplights. A plain carriage entry is located to the left, featuring rendered pilasters and metal-covered doors.
