Description
27 and 29 Kirkgate are two houses that have been converted into a shop. They date from the late 17th century, with a datestone on the rear wing indicating a date of 1797. The buildings were altered in the mid-19th century and again in the late 20th century. They are constructed of brick, which is colourwashed, while the rear is rendered and colourwashed. The roof is steeply pitched with pantiles and features sprocketed eaves at the front. The interior may include timber framing.
The buildings are two storeys high, plus attics, and have a three-window range of plain sash windows. Above these are two raking dormers with glazing bar casements. Near the center of the front is a mid-19th century doorcase with a cornice and overlight, leading to a 20th-century glazed door. This doorcase is flanked by single 20th-century box-shaped oriel windows. To the right, there is an elliptical-headed entry with a plate above it inscribed "Depot Yard". The double-gabled rear features first-floor and gable bands, two 20th-century casements, and between them, a datestone inscribed "H A 1797". There is an off-centre 20th-century door, which is flanked on the left by a plain sash window and on the right by two 20th-century casements.
