Description

Nos 35 and 37 High Street is an early 16th century merchant's house, designed in the "Une maison a deux corps de batiments" style. It features a small courtyard and an original separate kitchen block at the back. The building is now divided into two separate occupations and has two storeys with two windows. The hipped roof is covered with Welsh slate, and the front of the building is timber-framed with tile-hanging on the first and second floors.

No 35 has mid-19th century sash windows, while No 37 has a blocked second-floor window and an altered former ground floor window. The ground floor loggia extends over the pavement and is supported by two original octagonal columns made of Devonian limestone rubble, which have high square plinths and moulded caps. There is also a modern red sandstone pier at the west end.

Inside, the building has been altered, but No 35 still has earlier 18th century moulded ceiling beams with cavetto stops in the front room on the first floor, which was formerly the fore-hall. The rear first-floor room features a corbel from a former fireplace and an earlier 19th century chimneypiece with a reeded surround and stops. The kitchen block of No 37 retains an original open fireplace with a timber lintel and a massive stack, along with moulded ceiling beams and a blocked ground floor mullioned rear window with splayed reveals.
