Description

This is a late 16th-century merchant's house of the "deux corps de batiments" type, significantly remodelled in the earlier 19th century. It retains a small courtyard, a separate kitchen block, and a linking gallery. The building stands three stories high with a hipped Welsh slate roof. The front facade is painted brick, featuring a bracketed cornice and a blocking course, as well as pilaster strips defining the quoins. The first-floor window is a recessed three-light sash with a gauged brick arch and glazing bars. The second floor has two recessed sash windows. A ground-floor loggia, supported by granite Doric columns, extends over the pavement. A modern shopfront occupies the ground floor, alongside a passage entrance. Within the entrance is a section of original 16th-century panelling with a dado and fluted pilasters, and nearby, a section of early 18th-century panelling with a raised and fielded dado and panels. The ground floor features stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. A rear room on the first floor, originally a hall, boasts a decorative plaster ceiling with ribwork and pendants. A mid-18th-century open staircase has a closed string, turned balusters, square newels, and a moulded, swept handrail. The second floor incorporates 16th-century panelling, and a dentil pediment adorns the closet doorway near the staircase, which also features muntin and plank partitions. The building is designated Grade II* for the exceptional quality of its interior.
