Description

32 High Street is a late 18th century front to a merchant's house built around 1560 by Richard Brooking, who was Mayor in 1577. This building has been recognized as the Mayor's house since about 1500. It features a "une maison a deux corps de batiments" type layout, with the ruins of a former kitchen block at the rear. The structure is three storeys high and has two paired windows on the first floor. It is topped with a hipped Welsh slate roof and has a plaster front with a dentil eaves cornice. The windows are architraved sash windows with glazing bars, and there is one window on the second floor.

Inside, the ground floor rear room retains a 14th or 15th century granite open fireplace from the former hall of the medieval building, featuring a corbelled hood supported by simplified pilasters, with a hood that has a carved central star and shield motif. The mantle extends around to form sconce brackets similar to those found at Nos 43/45 High Street. This room also includes a plaster frieze with foliated decoration and a plaster ceiling from around 1560, enriched with ribwork, rosettes, and fleur-de-lis motifs. Fine oak panelling dated 1577 has been moved from an upstairs room.

The first floor front room features a cornice and fret decoration in the frieze panels. A late 17th century open staircase has been inserted at the end of the Elizabethan ground floor rear room (formerly the parlour), showcasing a closed string, turned balusters, and square newels topped with ball finials. The first floor front room, which was the former fore-hall, has a plaster ceiling decorated with ribwork, rosettes, and pendants, along with a plaster frieze featuring foliated decoration. The building is listed as Grade II* for its significant internal features.
