Description
21 and 21A High Street is a merchant's house dating from the 16th or 17th century, built in the "deux corps de batiments" style. It was rebuilt in the early 19th century but still has a small courtyard with traces of a former gallery and a separate kitchen block with outside steps leading to the first floor. The building has three storeys and features one window. It has a hipped Welsh slate roof with a plain eaves band and masonry party walls. The front is slate-hung and timber-framed, with slightly recessed sash windows that have glazing bars; the first-floor window includes sidelights. There is a modern shopfront. Inside, the building retains a segmental recess from a former newel staircase and a muntin and plank partition in the entrance passage. Notably, there are interesting remains of a former cockpit in the masonry cellar, which was originally accessed from the street by stone steps. The cockpit arena is walled off in one corner of the cellar.
