Description
Black Dog Cottage is a house located on the west side of The Square in Witheridge. It likely dates back to the 15th century, with flooring added in the 16th century and further internal and external changes made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is rendered and colour-washed, topped with a straw-thatched roof featuring end gables. The corner of the building on the left is rounded, including the thatched roof.
The cottage has a three-room-and-through-passage layout, although the through-passage has probably been removed. It was later used as an inn, with what was likely the upper end room on the right serving as a parlour. The exterior is two storeys high with three small 19th-century casement windows that have glazing bars. There are two door openings; the one on the left has a shallow lean-to porch with a slate roof, while the other to the right features a plank door.
Inside, the parlour to the right boasts a fine 18th-century corner fireplace set in a bolection-moulded wooden surround, along with fitted settles with panelled backs on either side. Adjacent to this room is an 18th-century fitted dresser. The ground floor has chamfered ceiling beams. The first floor and the roof were not inspected.
