Description

Nos. 21 and 23 on West Street are mid-19th century houses, with No. 21 featuring a symmetrical design and a central lobby entrance leading to a staircase, with rooms on either side. No. 23 is attached and has a similar layout but is oriented at right angles to the street. The buildings are two storeys high, with four first-floor windows that are asymmetrically spaced. These windows are 12-pane sash windows from the 19th century, with exposed sash boxes, thin glazing bars, and wooden cills.

The ground floor of No. 21 has a door opening to the left, which is a mid-19th century four-panelled door with a transom light above it, supported by a ledge porch on ornamental cast-iron brackets. To the right, there is a shop front from the early to mid-19th century, featuring a large three-pane window and a half-glazed door, flanked by wooden pilasters and topped with a fascia and ledge cornice. A further door opening from the 20th century has been inserted to the left of the ground floor.

The buildings occupy a prominent corner position. Inside No. 21, the left ground floor room has been converted into a shop and includes a fireplace with a reeded stone surround and a cupboard in the chimney breast alcove, although the door to this cupboard has been removed. The rest of the interior was not observed.
