Description

Nos. 17 and 18 Broad Street are a pair of late 18th-century houses, with a mid-19th-century shop front and 20th-century alterations. They are constructed of painted limestone ashlar with a slate mansard roof that has been enlarged and features 20th-century dormers and moulded stacks to the party walls. The buildings are three storeys high with an attic and basement, and have a two-window front. A returned coped parapet and cornice run along the top. The windows are largely original two-over-two pane sashes, though the second-floor window on the left has no horns. A section of the facade, with windows to the left of centre, steps slightly forward. The first-floor windows here are flanked by lower fixed windows, likely from the 20th century, and are virtually tripartite. An obtuse angle to the left corner creates a narrow return with semicircular arched lancet windows between the floor levels. A late 19th-century shop front alters the platband below the cornice, which is visible at each end of the building. Nos. 17 and 18 share a continuous cornice and fascia. The shop front originally had a doorway, but now features a window in the centre and two doors to the left, each flanked by elaborate mask consoles. The former shop doorway is now a window with a segmental arched head, and the flanking shop windows above it each have three panes to the overlight and moulded sills. The door to No. 17, on the far left, has four bolection moulded panels and a blocked overlight. The double shop doors to No. 18, inside the left, are 20th-century replacements. The interiors were not inspected.
