Description
19 and 20 Broad Street is a hostel with associated shops and public rooms, built in 1887 by T.B. Silcock. The building features limestone ashlar and a Welsh slate roof. It has a narrow street frontage with shops on the ground floor, offices above, and a hostel located behind. The exterior consists of three storeys and an attic, arranged in three bays. The ground floor displays horizontal rustication on four framing pilasters, with plain two-light shop windows on either side of a recessed central doorway that has a semicircular voussoir head and a shallow hood supported by console brackets. The first and second floors are adorned with a giant Ionic order of fluted pilasters, with the central bay slightly projecting and topped by a pediment. The first-floor windows are plain plate glass sashes set in moulded architraves, featuring keyed heads and cornice hoods on consoles. The second-floor windows are also plain plate glass sashes, but with eared architraves. Below the windows is an inscription that reads "JUBILEE MEMORIAL BUILDING," and the entablature features proud lettering stating "YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION." The building is finished with a dentil cornice and a balustraded parapet, and it has a mansard roof with gabled dormers. The rear elevation has not been seen. This building was opened to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887 and is noted for its contextual design that draws on Palladian architectural styles.
