Description

The Village Stores is a mid-19th century house with a shop on the ground floor, altered in the late 19th century. The walls are roughcast and whitewashed over a stone rubble core, with a hipped slate roof and two brick ridge stacks. Wide eaves are also present.

The building has a virtually symmetrical front, designed around a central staircase hall. To the left of the ground floor is a large room that served as a shop; to the right is a parlour. The first floor has two storeys and three bays, with four-pane sash windows in reveals, featuring exposed sash boxes.

The ground floor to the left has a late 19th century double shop front with three-pane glazing on each side of a central ingo, paired three-quarter glazed doors, flanking pilasters, an altered fascia board, a cornice, and ornamental wrought-iron cresting. A central principal door opening has a rusticated surround, a late 18th century six-panelled door with the top two panels glazed, a fanlight with radiating glazing bars, and a semi-circular head. To the left of this door is a small semi-circular head window. A further door opening to the right has paired early 19th century three-quarter glazed doors, a narrow transom light, and an ornamental surround with stepped voussoirs.

Inside, the room to the right of the ground floor features a fireplace with a reused moulded 17th-century bressumer set within a small fireplace with rubble jambs. The central hall originally contained a staircase, which has since been removed. On the first floor, a set of late 18th century six-panelled doors remains.
