Description
No. 3 The Square is a house located in Witheridge, dating from the 18th century, with some alterations from the 19th century. The building features cob and rubble walls and a thatched roof with gabled ends, along with three brick chimney stacks at the rear. The layout consists of a single room depth, with an entrance hall that has a straight-flight staircase roughly at the center. To the left, there are two small rooms that open into one another; the first room has a rear lateral chimney stack, while the second has a rear corner stack. The roof above the entrance hall also has a rear lateral stack.
The exterior of the house is two storeys high and has a symmetrical arrangement of windows, with two narrow 6-pane sash windows on each side. The central entrance features a half-glazed door and a half-glazed porch. Inside, the house has been significantly remodeled in the 19th century. The two ground floor rooms on the left include fireplaces with short, low wooden bressumers that are unchamfered. The staircase is a simpler design from the 18th or 19th century. The roof structure is from the 18th century, featuring collars that are pegged to the face of the straight principals.
