Description
The Methodist Church in Witheridge is a chapel built in 1839, with an additional schoolroom added in 1900. The main structure is made of rubble that has been rendered and scribed to resemble ashlar, topped with a gabled slate roof featuring wide eaves supported by brackets. The schoolroom has a gabled slate roof made of snecked rubble.
The chapel has a rectangular shape with a lean-to porch at the front and a Sunday-school wing extending at right angles. The main entrance features a late 19th-century segmental-headed opening, with a 9-pane fixed light casement on the first floor. The porch has a lean-to corrugated iron roof and includes two lancet windows with stained glass, along with a semi-circular head door opening that leads to a plank door. The schoolroom addition has square-headed and semi-circular head multi-pane windows.
Inside, the chapel was refitted in the late 19th century, featuring pine pews, a pulpit on a dais, and simple yet well-executed readers and balustrading. The schoolroom includes a late 19th-century chimneypiece with a cast-iron grate and late 19th-century joinery, including doors and surrounds. The main hall boasts an ornamental plaster ceiling center and a painted text on the wall.
