Description
Cannington House, now divided into two residences, is a house dating from the late 18th century. It features a roughcast stone rubble core, a large hipped slate roof, and brick stacks. The building has a long single room depth plan and is designed in a late Georgian style. It stands two storeys tall with an almost symmetrical arrangement of windows, including 12-pane sash windows with exposed sash boxes, except for a larger sash window on the right side of the ground floor that has additional marginal glazing bars. The central door opening is framed by a doorcase with an open triangular pediment, leading to a 6-panelled door with a fanlight that has glazing bars. There is also a secondary door opening to the left with a half-glazed door.
Inside, although access was limited, the hall contains a late 18th-century staircase featuring a moulded mahogany handrail, stick balusters, and tread brackets. Adjacent to the staircase are two cast-iron ornamental columns that support the first floor. The roof was not visible. The forecourt is enclosed by simple early or mid 19th-century railings with gates that match the style, along with rubble end piers and a rubble return wall.
