Description
The Mitre Hotel is an inn located on the north side of The Square in Witheridge, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of coursed and squared rubble and features wide bracketed eaves and a gabled slate roof with small late 19th-century brick stacks. The building has a central hall with a staircase that opens to reception rooms on either side; one of these is now a bar, and there are two smaller service rooms at the back of the hall. To the right, there is a carriageway with a room above.
The hotel is two storeys high and has a façade with a three-to-one window arrangement, showcasing mullioned and transomed two-light casements with closely set glazing bars. The central doorway in the left three bays is particularly striking, featuring a panelled door with a fanlight, a panelled ingo, and a wooden doorcase adorned with pilasters, an entablature, and a cornice. To the right of the ground floor, there is a segmental-headed carriage opening with 20th-century slatted wooden gates. Inside, the entrance hall boasts a fine 19th-century staircase with turned newels and a moulded handrail.
