Description

Lyncroft is a cottage, likely dating from the late 15th or early 16th century, with an addition from the 16th century. Later 19th and 20th-century windows have been incorporated. The construction is a mix of rubble and cob, with roughcast and colourwashed renders under a hipped thatched roof. Originally, it served as the inner room of a three-room and through-passage house, later expanded in the 16th century to create a two-room plan, and it was probably initially an open hall house.

The exterior is asymmetrical with two bays on two storeys. The first floor has two 19th-century casement windows with glazing bars, and another 19th-century casement on the ground floor. Two 20th-century casements with horizontal glazing bars are on the right of the ground floor. An inset door opening is to the extreme left, with a half-glazed door.

Inside, the ground floor contains two rooms. One has a chamfered lateral ceiling beam; the other room was divided in half during the 20th century. The first floor is largely unremarkable, except for a well-preserved hip cruck which the extent of any smoke blackening is unknown. The hall and lower end of the original house are now part of the adjacent property at No. 18, Plovers Barrows.
