Description

Wheelwrights Cottage is an 18th-century cottage located on the west side of The Square in Witheridge. The walls are of cob, which has been rendered and colourwashed. The roof is thatched, with a half-hipped design and a lower section to the left, featuring a projecting brick stack.

The cottage's plan consists of a small lobby with a service room to the right of the entrance, and a larger room to the left containing a large fireplace on the rear wall. The front facade is two storeys high and asymmetrical, with a 1:1 window arrangement. On the left side are two 3-light 19th-century casement windows with horizontal glazing bars. A large, late 18th-century tripartite window is on the right, with flanking pilasters and an overhanging cornice; this window contains a central 16-pane sash and sidelights. The right return side has two bays of 2- and 3-light 19th-century casement windows with horizontal glazing bars, and a central doorway with a plank door. The interior was modernized in the late 20th century, and appears to have no original features.
