Description

Chantry Cottage is a cottage of probable 17th-century origin, located on The Square in Gillingham. The building is constructed of coursed rubble walls topped with a thatched roof, and features end brick stacks. It is arranged as a cross-wing with a main block, presenting a 1½-storey facade with a four-window range. The upper floor has two-light casement windows with glazing bars. The ground floor now has 20th-century plain casement windows: two-light windows to the left of the central plank door and three-light windows to the right, all within a 20th-century porch. An external chimney breast is present on the west gable. Internal features, as documented by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments, include a first-floor fireplace with a chamfered 4-centred bressummer and chamfered stone jambs with broach stops, as well as chamfered ceiling beams.
