Description
Plovers Barrows is a cottage located on the north side of West Street in Witheridge. It dates from the late 15th century or early 16th century, with flooring added in the late 16th century, and underwent internal rearrangement and external window changes in the 19th century, along with further work in the 20th century. The cottage features a hall and lower room of a through-passage and three-room house, with the lower room always floored over. This flooring extends over the passage and jetties out into the hall, which was floored over in the late 16th century.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical arrangement of three windows. The first floor has two-light 19th-century casements with glazing bars, while the ground floor has two larger two-light 19th-century casements. There is a central door opening with a half-glazed door and a 20th-century ledge hood. A small opening with a barred iron frame was added to the right of the door in the late 20th century.
Inside, there is a plank and muntin screen on the higher side of the through-passage. The ends of the internal jetty beams project into the hall, which features a fireplace with a broad wooden bressumer and a rear lateral stack. The lower room to the left has a fireplace with a narrow wooden bressumer. A cruck truss is visible from the chamber over the hall, which is ceiled, and there is a closed truss at both ends of the hall, making the roof space above inaccessible. The inner room is now part of No. 16 (Lynecroft).
