Description
Castle Cottage is a cottage dating from the late medieval period, with alterations made in the 16th and 17th centuries. The exterior is roughcast over cob and rubble, topped with a thatched roof that is hipped to the left. There is a brick stack located at the right gable end and another to the left of the cross passage. The layout includes an open hall with an internal jetty that has been inserted, and the building is ceiled to three ceilings with a cross passage.
The cottage has one and a half storeys and features late 19th to early 20th century casements. There is a three-light dormer on the left side of the roof space with a double Roman tiled sill. On the ground floor, there are two and three-light casements to the left of the entrance, and a single-storey extension with a triple Roman tiled roof on the right. The entrance has a recessed 20th-century plank door.
Inside, the cottage is notable for its exposed internal jetty at the upper end. It is also said to contain franked partitions, a depressed four-centre arched doorway leading to the inner room, chamfered beams with step and run-out stops, and a moulded lintel above the fireplace in the cross passage. Some of the roof trusses have been partly rebuilt.
