Description

Norton Court is a house dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, which was enlarged and extensively altered around 1840. The building is rendered over rubble with a slate roof featuring coped verges and stone stacks at the left gable end, along with a rendered stack to the left and a cross gable. The evolution of its L-plan layout is unclear, but it appears that an earlier dwelling was expanded in the 19th century on the south front.

The house is two storeys high and has a facade with three bays, one bay, and one bay. The ground floor features 2 and 3-light 19th-century mullioned windows with transoms, while a single-storey canted bay has a 4-light window with a balustrade in the gabled fourth bay. The entrance is located in a single-storey Ham stone porch from the 19th century, which has a plinth, balustrade, and a 4-centred arch opening with a boarded soffit and a moulded 19th-century door.

On the left return facing the churchyard, there is a blocked mullioned window under a hoodmould, with 17th-century ovolo moulded mullioned windows on the elevation between stopped buttresses that reach almost to the eaves. Inside, the roof has been renewed, and there is a 19th-century compartment ceiling to the left of the cross passage, along with imported 17th-century panelling in the room to the right. The rear features an early 19th-century air plasterwork ceiling, which is likely the only surviving notable feature from the early 16th century. Historically, the house served as a brewery in the 19th century and has also been known as Barton and then Court Place.
