Description

The walls enclosing the garden on the north and east sides, located opposite the entrance to Norton Court, date from the early 18th century and were partly renewed in the mid-20th century. They are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with a random rubble plinth and brick and Ham stone coping, standing approximately 2.5 meters high. The walls form a rectangular kitchen garden, with the north wall measuring about 50 meters in length, part of which serves as the boundary wall for Cedar Gables (not included). This wall features a square-headed doorway that has had additional brickwork added above it. The east wall is about 70 meters long and has a single span opening at the north end, flanked by square gatepiers topped with stone ball finials. These gatepiers have a cyma recta moulded cornice, scroll-topped revertments, and moulded coping on the plinth, resembling those at Buckland House in Durston. At the time of the survey in March 1984, the walls were heavily overgrown with ivy. Approximately 20 meters to the south, there is a square projection with brick coping that stands about 3 meters high, likely a gazebo or summer house, which has had its upper courses and coping renewed. There is also a double gate opening about 20 meters further south, with the southern gatepier rebuilt and lacking ball finials, featuring a 20th-century double gate. The wall continues south to The Lodge (not included) and sweeps down, with the upper courses of brickwork and coping having been renewed. This area was formerly the kitchen garden for Norton Court.
