Description
The gatepiers and gate at the entrance to Norton Court date from the 18th century, with the lions possibly being older and reset. The gates were made in the early to mid-19th century. Constructed from Ham stone and cast iron, the gatepiers are square and rusticated, featuring square-cut joints, a moulded cornice, and a plinth topped with lions seated. The gate itself is double, with pierced fleurs-de-lys uprights. According to Jeboult in his 1892 work "History of West Somerset," the lions served as the escutcheons of the Prowse family, who previously occupied Norton Court.
