Description

Church Cottage is an 18th-century cottage situated in Poughill. It is constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with a rubble stack incorporating 19th and 20th-century brickwork, and a thatched roof. Originally facing south, the cottage has a two-room plan with the stack located at the right (east) end. The facade features two windows. Late 19th-century casements with glazing bars are present in the upper storey, while the ground floor windows are 20th-century casements. A previous doorway was blocked and is now indicated by a window on the left side; a modern porch now obscures the present doorway on the right end. The roof is hipped at both ends.

The larger, heated room contains a plain chamfered crossbeam and a rubble fireplace with a plain oak lintel and a brick oven to the left. The roof structure is an A-frame design, featuring nailed lap-jointed collars, with the tenon carried through to seat the ridge at each apex.
