Description

The Barton is a large farmhouse built around 1830. It features plastered and roughcast rubble walls, with rubble and brick stacks topped by brick chimney shafts, and a slate roof. The main block has two rooms facing south, a central stair plan, and end stacks. At the rear center, there is a service block positioned at right angles, with a stack in the wall between the wings. The building is two storeys high and has a symmetrical front with three windows, which are 16-pane sashes, some of which are horned sash copies. The front is roughcast, but it has flat stucco architraves around the windows and pilasters at each end. The central entrance features a six-panel door with an overlight that has glazing bars, and it is sheltered by a timber Doric porch with a plain entablature. The rear of the main block has 12-pane sashes on either side of the service wing, which also includes large pane sashes from the 20th century. Inside, there are some original joinery and plasterwork elements.
