Description
Carradale Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around 1830, although some parts may be older. It is constructed of plastered brick on stone rubble footings, with brick stacks and some 19th-century chimney pots, and features a slate roof. The house is L-shaped, with the main block facing south and a two-room plan that includes a central staircase and end stacks. There is a two-room plan service block that extends at right angles to the rear of the left (western) room, which contains projecting inner lateral stacks and an end stack.
The building is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window front. Originally, the ground floor windows were 20-pane sashes, while the first-floor windows had 16 panes, but these were partially repaired with larger panes following bomb blast damage in 1944. The central doorway features plain panelled double doors within a doorcase that has panelled pilasters, a segmental arch, and a short flat hood. The eaves are plain, and the roof is hipped at both ends.
On the outer (western) face of the rear block, there is a three-window front of casements with glazing bars, along with a secondary door that has a 20th-century gabled and slate-roofed porch. The inner face of the rear block contains a 12-pane sash window. Additionally, a woodshed lean-to at the back of the main block includes two reused 17th-century oak three-light window frames with chamfered mullions. The interior was not available for inspection at the time of the survey but is reported to include much original joinery detail, including the staircase.
