Description
Nos. 37 and 39 on St Nicholas Street in Thetford are a pair of mid-19th century houses with shop fronts, possibly with earlier origins. They are constructed from flint with gault brick dressings and are whitewashed, topped with pantile roofs. The buildings are two storeys high.
No. 37 features an unhorned 8/8 sash window and a similar 6/6 sash window, which are separated by a plank door. To the right, there is a mid-19th century shop front that includes a 3/3 display sash window and a plank side entrance door. The first floor has three blind windows and a dentil eaves cornice. The gabled roof has a rebuilt internal gable-end stack on the south side, and the south gable wall was rebuilt in the 20th century.
No. 39 is oriented more conventionally, though its three bays are irregular, indicating an older core. It has a half-glazed central door with an overlight, flanked by two 2-light casement windows, with the left one featuring a segmental head. There is a similar casement window above the door and an unhorned 3/3 sash window on either side. This house also has a dentil eaves cornice, a gabled roof with an internal gable-end stack to the south, and a ridge stack located to the right of centre. The interior has not been inspected.
