Description

The King’s Head Inn is a coaching inn dating back to the early 18th century, with a re-faced facade from 1878. It is constructed of flint with brick dressings, and features a painted gault brick facade. The roof is covered in pantiles. The building is two storeys high with a dormer attic, though the original number of bays is unclear. There are four doorways, three of which are sheltered by 20th-century gabled hoods. A tall, square-headed carriageway leads to the rear, lined with flint. The ground floor windows consist of one 20th-century casement on the right, and to the left, two 2-light cross casements and four 6/6 sashed windows without horns. The first floor has one unhorned and three horned 6/6 sashed windows. An 18th-century two-light casement is located at the extreme north (right) end, with a secondary casement above the carriageway. Two flat-topped dormers are visible on the gabled roof, along with three gault brick ridge stacks. A contemporary outshut is at the rear. The rear of the building has a mix of windows, including two 18th-century three-light casements on the ground floor, one swivel window and one horizontal-sliding sash on the first floor. Inserted doors and 20th-century windows are also present. The outshut has two additional stacks. Inside, the ground floor has chamfered bridging beams and the first floor has boxed bridging beams. Original 2-panel doors and a plank door to the attic remain. The 18th-century roof retains a lower tier of through purlins and an upper tier clasped by 20th-century plank collars.
