Description
Nos 1 and 2 are a pair of attached houses located on Tamar Place in Calstock. They date from the late 18th century and have undergone alterations for a shop in the early 19th century, along with further changes in the 19th and 20th centuries. The houses are constructed of painted slatestone rubble and feature an asbestos slate roof with gable ends and gable end stacks that have rendered shafts.
The layout consists of No. 1 on the left and No. 2 on the right. No. 1 has a double depth plan with one room at the front and one at the rear, while No. 2 also has one room at the front and rear but has a wider frontage. In the early 19th century, a shop was inserted into the front room of No. 1.
The exterior of the houses is three storeys high with an asymmetrical front. No. 1 features a central 20th-century door with fluted pilasters and a blocked overlight. To the right, there is a bowed early 19th-century 24-pane shop window with pilasters on either side and a fascia above, topped with pitched slates. The first floor has a 19th-century 16-pane sash window with a splayed stone head, while a 20th-century metal-framed window is located on the second floor.
No. 2 has a half-glazed 20th-century door on the ground floor and a 20th-century three-light casement window, with a fascia that continues from No. 1. There are two 20th-century metal-framed windows on the first and second floors. The right side of No. 2 is blind, while the left side is in rubble with a 20th-century door to the right. There is also a single-storey addition at the upper level on the left side, and the houses are built into the bank at the rear. The interior has not been inspected.
