Description
A late 18th-century house and shop, altered in the mid-to-late 19th century to incorporate a shop, with further later alterations. The building is constructed of painted stone rubble, with a hipped slate roof and an axial brick chimney stack. It occupies a corner site and is built into a bank, with a basement to the left side. The house originally comprised two rooms, one at the front and one at the rear, each heated by the axial stack. A shop was inserted into the basement, with a shop front added to the left side.
The building has three stories and a basement, presenting an asymmetrical two-window front. External stone steps with 20th-century railings lead to a central 6-panelled door framed by fluted pilasters and a pediment. A 19th-century four-pane sash window is on the left side of the ground floor. The first and second floors each have two 19th-century four-pane sash windows. At basement level, on the left side, a shop window contains two plate-glass panes, flanked by colonnettes and pilasters, beneath a cornice resting on consoles. The shop front detail is continued over the main shop front, which features half-glazed double doors and a canted bay shop window with colonnettes and a plain fascia; a single plate-glass shop window sits to the left. The ground, first, and second floors have a 19th-century four-pane sash window to the left and a blind window to the right. The interior has not been inspected.
