Description

No. 8 Fore Street is a house dating from the early 19th century, with later alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of stone rubble that is rendered and lined out, topped with a slate roof featuring ridge tiles and gable ends. It has gable end stacks, with a brick shaft on the right and a rendered shaft on the left.

The house has a double depth plan with a central entrance. The principal rooms are located at the front left and right, each heated by a gable end stack. Originally, the room on the left had a shop added in the late 19th century, but it has since been incorporated back into the house. There are shallow service rooms at the rear.

The exterior features two storeys and a symmetrical three-window front. The first floor has 18th-century 12-pane sash windows in exposed boxes. The ground floor has a central 20th-century door with a large margin-glazed overlight. To the right, there is a 12-pane sash window in a plain reveal, while the left side has a small canted bay with plate-glass windows and a cornice. The fascia and cornice at the ground floor extend continuously from No. 9 next door. The left side of the building is made of slatestone rubble and includes a single light window on the first floor to the left. The interior has not been inspected.
