Description
No. 4 Castle Park is a house built in the late 18th century and altered in the 19th century. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar with ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof. The building has a prominent gable chimney stack on the left and another stack on the right that it shares with No. 2. The house has a double-depth plan with a rear wing on the right and stands three storeys above a cellar, with three bays on the front.
The windows have plain raised surrounds and 4-pane sashes, except for the central window on the second floor, which is blind and has 12 fixed panes. The heads of the other second-floor windows appear to have been raised, and the lower parts of their surrounds have been infilled. The doorway, located in the right-hand bay, has a plain raised surround topped with a moulded cornice. The original doorway in the central bay features an integral rectangular overlight with glazing bars arranged in a diamond pattern above a square panel, which is subdivided with framing to create a concave-sided hollow diamond. To the right of the door, there are railings with cast-iron arrow-head balusters.
Inside, most doorways have reeded architraves. At the back of the entrance hall, there is a three-bay arcade with square pilasters supporting semi-elliptical arches. From the centre of this arcade, a dogleg staircase rises, featuring an open string and stick balusters. The ground-floor front room includes window shutters and a triple alcove with semi-elliptical arches.
