Description
Number 2 is an early 19th-century house, later used as a school and now converted into flats. It is located on the south side of Castle Park, Lancaster. The house is constructed of sandstone ashlar with a slate roof, featuring coped gables and very prominent gable chimney stacks. It has a double-depth plan, with a two-storey service wing to the left and a later semi-octagonal projection at the rear, designed to accommodate the staircase; the original stair position is indicated by a round-headed window in the right-hand gable wall. The house has three storeys above a basement, which is expressed as a plinth. It has five bays, with a sill band on the first and second floors and an eaves cornice. The tall windows have plain reveals and glazing bars, arranged in 12 and 9 panes. The front door, recessed behind three steps with nosings, is set within a moulded architrave under a cornice resting on fluted brackets. An integral overlight sits above the panelled door, which features three raised and fielded vertical panels above a square panel subdivided with framing into a concave-sided hollow diamond. Either side of the doorway are areas enclosed by dwarf walls and cast-iron railings, featuring stick balusters and column-shaped standards topped with urn finials. The interior includes a flying geometrical staircase with mid-19th-century cast-iron balusters.
